Can hypnotherapy help with alcohol control?

I regularly get asked if hypnotherapy can help someone reduce their alcohol use and the answer is always…sometimes, yes, but…

Now – that may not sound particularly encouraging, but I’m going to qualify what I mean. If someone is an addict, whether it’s drink, drugs or food, hypnotherapy can help if it’s part of a wider range of treatment and support. Addicts tend to love the subject of their addiction more than anything or anyone and will do whatever it takes to get their next fix. They may well have deep psychological issues and almost certainly massive self esteem issues. All my clients will tell you that when I’m asked how hypnotherapy can help you, I always say that hypnotherapy is not a magic wand, but it is a powerful tool to help you achieve your aims – you just need to be prepared to use it effectively and with determination.

If, however, you are someone who recognises that alcohol can be an issue, and you want to reduce drinking or get to the point where you can just as easily not drink alcohol as not, then hypnotherapy is your friend!

When working on a habit with hypnotherapy, it’s really important to replace the habit you want to ditch with something new and positive. What this is will be something that the hypnotherapist will always decide with their client as it will depend on so many personal factors. For some, it will be about deciding that their first two drinks of the evening will be non-alcoholic, for others it will be about diluting the alcohol content – a wine spritzer, a shandy, a single measure of spirit in a very tall glass of mixer and some will alternate their alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Those are the most common paths but there are others. A hypnotherapist will also work with you to help all the parts of your brain and personality to agree that they will come together to help you to achieve your goal.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could ignore ‘Dry January’ and ‘Sober October’ because you knew your relationship with alcohol was healthy all year round?
