Dreaming is something we all do every night, irrespective of whether we remember our dreams or not. We don’t know for certain why we dream but we do know it’s something we need to do, as research has shown that not dreaming results in problems such as hallucinations and an inability to concentrate.

Dreams are symbolic of what’s going on inside of us. They are really just stories and images from our lives and worries that our brain makes into a story using the events, people and objects we encounter during the day. This can occur at any time during sleep but research has shown that the most vivid dreams happen during the REM phase (Rapid Eye Movement) when the brain is most active and it that it takes place in very specific areas of the brain, the limbic system and the amygdala where our earliest memories and experiences are stored.

Dream therapy takes the information from dreams and assigns meanings to them based on each individual’s life and situation. This can then be used to help improve their emotional wellbeing by finding correlations and connections between the images in the dreams and in real life. It can also help to find out unconscious or subconscious dilemmas, as well as ways to handle life situations by finding the solutions to deal with them. Dream therapy can also prove very helpful at uncovering repressed thoughts and emotions that may be having a negative impact.

By finding meaning in the images and elements from dreams it’s possible to gain a significant insight into peoples psyche making it possible to find strategies to heal emotional or psychological problems so we can achieve better self-awareness and a greater understanding of our emotions.
