Can you get 'stuck' in hypnosis?

One of the myths surrounding hypnosis is that you can get ‘stuck’ and be unable to emerge from a hypnotic state. We’re happy to confirm that its physically impossible for this to occur because you are not unconscious at any point during the hypnosis, simply in a fully conscious, deeply relaxed state that you can come out of any time you wish.

Hypnosis is actually a natural state of awareness which you drift in and out of by yourself on a subconscious level every day, examples being daydreaming, being absorbed in a book or film, driving on auto pilot, and drifting off to sleep. When you’re hypnotised, you go into an altered state of awareness, but you can return to full alertness by yourself, or when asked to by the hypnotherapist. Even if something were to happen to the hypnotherapist whilst you were hypnotised, after a while, you would wonder why they had stopped talking and ‘wake up’ by yourself!

Sometimes you might be so comfortable in your relaxed state that it might take you a few minutes to return to your usual awareness or to feel a little disorientated, but this is quite normal. Most people, feel alert and clear-headed within a few minutes but occasionally you might experience mild physical symptoms, such as a headache or dizziness, but these are typically short-lived, and will not have any lasting effects.

In short, hypnosis is a safe and reversible state … and you always have the ability to emerge from it whenever you choose to do so.
