Fears and Phobias

Fears and Phobias

Many people suffer from an extreme fear or phobia. The cause of these varies enormously but some of the most common are a fear of heights, spiders, snakes, dogs, flying, being sick and needles. Fears and phobias often start in early life and can develop for several reasons. It may be something that runs in a family so it becomes a learned behaviour or an event occurs that a child sees as traumatic and it develops from that.

Suffering from an extreme fear or phobia causes people to organise their life so they can avoid the cause of their fear or anxiety.  They generally know that their fear is irrational, but they cannot control it. The symptoms they suffer from may include:

  • Unsteadiness, dizziness and light headedness

  • Nausea

  • Sweating

  • Increased heart rate or palpitations

  • Shortness of breath

  • Trembling or shaking

Although phobias are common, they don’t always cause distress or disrupt your life. However, if avoiding the cause of your fear or phobia interferes with your normal life, or stops you doing things you would otherwise enjoy, it’s time to seek help.

Hypnotherapy can help with fears and phobias by trying to identify the cause of the phobia and then reframing it so you feel differently about the cause. It can also help through relaxation and visualisation techniques for desensitisation and forming new habits such as being more calm and relaxed.
