Do you suffer from Imposter Syndrome?

96% of respondents to a recent Roar Training survey said they had suffered from Imposter Syndrome, with over half saying they had turned down work opportunities due to a lack of confidence.

Impostor Syndrome is something many of us experience at some point. It can often strike at moments of success – a new job, promotion or additional responsibilities - and can lead to a feeling of doubt about your skills, talents, or achievements.  It can also make you feel that you don't deserve success and that what you’ve achieved is down to luck, good timing or just being in the right place at the right time.

There’s also a fear that you'll be exposed as a fraud and this can push you to work harder, so you’re not ‘found out’. Of course, this means you can end up achieving more, which makes you feel an even bigger fraud! Other people take a different course and become less ambitious, reduce their goals and ultimately don’t fulfil their real potential.

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome requires self-acceptance, a recognition of your own potential and taking ownership of your achievements. A good company culture and support are beneficial when dealing with the feelings of self-doubt that can stir up the anxiety, fear and stress which can lead to burnout. Respondents to the survey also suggested that regular feedback (77%) and catch ups (54%) were ways employers could help improve their confidence whilst training, external (64%) and internal (59%), were also valued.
